La bouche rouge selects its ingredients for their quality, efficacy, and origin. Our skincare-infused makeup formulas do not include any petrochemical derivatives, silicones nor microplastics.

Microplastics. Plastic does not belong on our lips, nor in our oceans. Most lipstick formulas contain polyethylene and PPMA. No one should ingest plastic. Microplastics are also extremely harmful to the environment as they make their way into our wastewater and, eventually, our oceans.

Animal products. Ingredients of animal origin or animal fat are banned from our formulas. We have eliminated beeswax from our products to fight the industrial exploitation of bees. We chose to replace beeswax with a plant-origin wax.

BHA/BHT. BHA and BHT are antioxidants. As they can cause irritation and allergies to the skin, we have replaced them with vitamin E in our formulas.

Parabens. Certain parabens are endocrine disruptors. We ban all parabens in our formulas, instead using authorized preservatives in organic and natural cosmetics (Ecocert and Cosmos standard).

Aluminum Powder. Elemental aluminum is one of the most abundant elements on earth. It is often used as a colorant and can cause hormone disruption and organ system toxicity.

Chemical Sunscreens. Certain chemical sunscreens can be linked to hormone disruption. We ban all chemical sunscreens in our formulas, including Avobenzone, Benzophenone, Oxybenzone and Octinoxate.

EDTA. We do not use EDTA such as Calcium Disodium EDTA, Tetrasodium EDTA or Trisodium EDTA in our formulas, as they are harmful to the environment. These ingredients do not disintegrate in water.

Ethanolamines. Ethanolamines are likely to be contaminated with chemicals that are linked to cancer.

Ethoxylated Ingredients. These ingredients are synthetically produced using Ethylene Oxide, a carcinogen. They can be linked to breast cancer and other forms of cancer.

Formaldehyde. Formaldehyde releasers and donors usually include other ingredients linked to allergic skin reactions and cancer.

Hydroquinone. We do not use this ingredient in our formulas, as it can cause skin irritation and skin discoloration.

Methyl Cellosolve or 2-Methoxyethanol. Usually used in perfumes, this solvent has been banned in the EU because it is linked to skin irritation and may cause risk to vital organs.

Methylchloroisothiazolinone and Methylisothiazolinone. We do not use these preservatives in our formulas. In addition to being banned in the EU, they can also cause skin allergies and are toxic to the nervous system.

Mineral oils and waxes. Lipstick and balms can be ingested, so they should not contain ingredients that are banned in the food industry, such as mineral oils. They are suspected to generate indesirable components that are absorbed by the liver and cause cancer.

Nanoparticles. We prohibit all nanoparticles, including nano-titanium dioxide.

Palm Oil. Palm cultivation has been associated with deforestation, destruction to ecosystems, greenhouse gas emissions, loss of biodiversity and social conflicts in countries that produce this product. La bouche rouge is committed to only sourcing palm-derived materials that are certified through strict verification of the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO) principles and criteria for sustainable palm oil production. If grown sustainably, palm oil can benefit local communities by providing fair working conditions, all the while protecting our invaluable species and forests.

Perfluorinated compound (PFASs or PFCs).  We do not use perfluorinated compound in our formulas as they do not break down in the environment and are also linked to health issues.

Petrolatum and Paraffin and most generallly all petroleum-derived ingredients. We do not use these ingredients in our formulas, as if they are not properly refined, they may lead to cancer.

Phenoxyethanol. This ingredient was evaluated to be harmful for both the liver and blood by ANSM, however, it is authorized in low concentrations. We have chosen to ban it completely.

Phthalates. Some phthalates are considered hormone disruptors, which is why we do not use them in our formulas.

Polycyclic Musks and Nitromuscs. We do not use any types of synthetic musks, as they are endocrine disruptors and can harm the environment.

Resorcinol. We do not use Resorcinol in our formulas as it can cause skin irritation, allergies and hormone disruption.

Silicones. We do not use silicones in our formulas as they harm the environment. For the production of our lipsticks, we exclusively use metal molds that are cleaned and reused, as opposed to single-use silicone molds.

Talc. Talc is suspected to irritate the airway, so we have excluded it from our powder formulas.

Toluene. Toluene can often be found in nail polishes and is a toxic solvent to the immune system. We have banned it from our formulas, as it can cause birth defects.

Triclosan and Triclocarban. These two ingredients are harmful to the environment because they are persistent and can cause hormone disruption.

Synthetic and mineral waxes. We do not use synthetic or mineral waxes, nor mineral oils in our formulas, they are pollutant for the environment all throughout their life cycle and can cause skin effects including skin irritation and cancer.

Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs). Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) are plants and organisms that are derived from biotechnology techniques. These methods were originally developed to assist farmers in the production of food crops, as well as to target and alter specific traits of the organism to provide consumer health benefits.  When possible, we avoid using GMOs.

The below ingredients are not included in our blacklist as we do not consider them to be harmful to you or to the environment.

Titanium dioxide. Titanium dioxide is a natural pigment authorized in organic cosmetics. It poses no risk to health when not in its nanoparticulate form.

Aluminum oxides. Aluminum salts or oxides are different from elemental aluminum. They are poorly absorbed by the human body due to their low solubility. We thereby use aluminum oxide (aka alumina), aluminum hydroxide and related compounds as functional ingredients in products.

Mica. La bouche rouge is aware of the troubling reality of unethical working conditions, including child labour and overexposure to dust in mica mines. As we have zero tolerance for these practices, we partnered with manufacturers who are members of the Responsible Mica Initiative to ensure we only use ethically-sourced Mica in our products. This initiative employs a comprehensive approach across industries, and is working towards addressing the economic and social roots behind this issue in order to drive long-lasting change.

La bouche rouge stands for "red lips" in French but also for having a voice, striking a message.
