British makeup artist Wendy Rowe unveils a collection of six tubes that are just her style: energetic, eclectic and universal. Among them, a poppy hue inspired by the canvases of Andy Warhol, a seventies, slightly orangey red - think all-American, Pepsi Cola and roller disco and an ultra-pigmented deep red-brown, hot as the flames in a fireplace.
WHAT WAS YOUR LAST REVOLUTIONARY ACTION OR WORD?
I think that you shouldn’t be restrained by makeup products and tools – use them how you choose to, there is no prescribed way to use things. Don’t be a conformist – I’m not! I never look at what it says on the packet for how you should use things – with makeup products and brushes, I use them however I want to! I am always applying makeup on areas of the face that it’s not necessarily designed for. With these lipsticks, for instance, I have been using the sheerer textures on the cheeks as a cream blush and it works really well, not just as a lipstick.
WHAT MAKES YOU CONFIDENT AND DETERMINED TO GO THROUGH YOUR DAY?
For me, working out is essential – it makes me feel energized and ready for whatever the day might bring.
HOW WOULD YOU DEFINE ELEGANCE?
For me, elegance is being effortlessly chic. You should be comfortable in yourself, with gorgeous, flawless skin. I think a red lip always adds an instant touch of elegance, but you have to own a red lip – for some people that will be an intense, full on matte red lip and for others it might just be an effortless stain; it has to feel effortless for the individual to be elegant.
WHO IS THE MOST INSPIRING FASHION DESIGNER?
Christopher Bailey really inspires me, because he re-invents the wheel every season. I love how he takes heritage designs or inspirations and makes them modern. Phoebe Philo inspires me too, her designs reminds me of the sorts of things I used to wear at school and I love that it is evocative of that time for me, growing up. Hedi Slimane’s designs are great too – I always think his designs are classic, but yet there are real “pieces” in the collections that he manages to make really modern and cool. Of course, Yves Saint Laurent is a design icon also, I love a classic tuxedo for myself, and I’m inspired by that YSL tuxedo woman and the way she looks.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PIECE OF ART?
I like art by Tracy Emin – it always looks like the sort of thing you could do yourself, but then when you try to, you can’t! I like the use of words too. I used to do graphics before I was a makeup artist, so I think that’s maybe why the words in her artwork appeal to me.
WHAT IS YOUR COLOR INSPIRATION?
Flowers always inspire me – there are always so many amazing natural colours in flowers and the nuances are subtle and often inspire my makeup looks. Materials are also inspiring to me: they have a unique richness and depth to them that I love.
WHAT MAKES YOU A BOUCHE ROUGE ?
For me, anything that is environmentally friendly is good and it’s my belief that being beautiful shouldn’t negatively impact the environment, and doesn’t need to. I also love beautiful objects that are made to last, that stand the test of time and are timeless and beautiful. The combination of the exquisite craftsmanship and the eco-friendly element makes La Bouche Rouge a good fit for me.
